How to Professionally and Easily Clean Artificial Turf
Clean artificial turf, fake grass, astroturf, and any other artificial lawn system quickly and easily,
while also being safe for your pets, children, and other plants.
Sounds too good to be true right? Read down and you'll be even more surprised just how easy it is, no matter if you're doing a quick deodourizing of pet messes, doing a maintenance clean to prevent moss and weed growth, or doing a full turf restoration. All the processes start with a product called OxyShock, which is biodegradable, storm drain approved, safe for animals and children when used as directed, and incredibly long lasting results.
Quick Cleaning / Removing Smells
For quick and easy smell removal, or spot treating for a newer turf surface, mix OxyShock 50/50 with clean fresh water in a standard plastic pump up sprayer. We recommend the 1-2 gallon sizes.
Next, pump it up and spray the effected areas generously, keep all people, children, and animals off until the surface has dried.
Final step, do nothing! wait for the rain to rinse it away, no component of OxyShock will damage your turf. You will see a foaming reaction the first time it rains.
Moderate Cleaning / Moss and Weed Killing
When your turf has built up more substantial growth, its time for a deeper clean. This method will take a little while longer to act, and has more steps to properly care for your turf surface.
1.) Spray the entire area with a coating of OxyShock undiluted with any airless spray system, which may be a pump sprayer, a paint sprayer, or a 12V soft wash style pump
2.) Allow the OxyShock to work into any moss / root systems for a minimum of 2 Days, Keep animals and children off the surface during this time. The drier these two days, the better
3.) Use a power broom, or walk behind turf sweeping system, to collect all the debris from inside the turf. Do this step very thoroughly, collecting as much plant and weed material from between the blades of turf as possible.
4.) Rinse down using a high volume low pressure amount of water, this can be from a garden hose or a pressure washer, continue to flood the surface until the foam has subsided. This may take some time, but will leave your turf fresh for the next year or two.
5.) For proper turf care, measure the height of your silica sand after drying from the wash down. Check with the manufacturer of your turf for the specified sand height, and replace as necessary then fully sweep in.
Full Turf Deep Clean / Restoration.
Sometimes in organics contamination heavy areas, or people with heavy pet use the turf will need periodic restorations of a full deep clean and replacement of its silica sand which has become too full of organics / odours to easily clean out.
We recommend this option for professionals only.
1.) Apply OxyShock undiluted to the entire turf surface undiluted, use an airless spray system such as a paint sprayer or a 12V batch mix soft wash system, or a backpack sprayer for efficiency. Ensure all the sand in the turf has been saturated to the bottom
2.) Allow the OxyShock to dwell a minimum of 4 hours.
3.) Pressure wash under moderate - high pressure cold, do this in one direction, then again in the other direction, rinse until no foam remains and no visible moss or weeds remain.
4.) Allow the turf to fully dry, typically 1-2 days
5.) Re fill with proper turf silica sand to the turf manufacturers specified height, often 1/2" from the woven base. Sweep in from multiple directions, get all the blades of turf to stand up straight, and triple check you've achieved the correct height over the whole lawn.
6.) OPTIONAL: Mist the lawn with a mixture of 75% clean water and 25% oxyshock to prevent new moss and weed growth over the next year or two, and aiding in the ability to remove organics when next sweep occurs.
No matter which option you choose, a walk behind sweeping system for turf is advisable for both home owners and professionals alike. It gives a very thorough sweep, and collects all the fallen plant matter from nearby trees which gives food to moss and weeds.
