Trident Hurricane CAT 5 wet look urethane paver sealer kit

Trident CAT 5 vs Cyclone vs Break Wall: Which Paver Sealer Do You Need?

Choose Trident Hurricane CAT 5 for the deepest wet look, high gloss and the strongest joint sand stabilization. Choose Cyclone for a matte, natural look with hardened joints. Choose Break Wall when you want an invisible penetrating sealer that blocks water and road salt. CAT 5 and Cyclone stabilize joint sand; Break Wall does not.

What are the three Trident sealers we stock?

Trident Protects makes a family of paver and concrete sealers. We stock three of them in Canada, and they split into two groups.

Film-forming, joint-stabilizing sealers:

  • Hurricane CAT 5: a super-concentrated, water-based 2-part aliphatic urethane. One 7 gal kit makes 15 gallons ready to use at the D1 ratio or 20 gallons at D2. D1 gives more gloss and stronger joint sand stabilization; D2 is the leaner, economy ratio.
  • Cyclone: a water-based, matte, film-forming sealer with a joint stabilizer, sold ready to apply in a 5 gal pail.

Penetrating sealer:

  • Break Wall: a water-based silane/siloxane blend that soaks in and leaves no visible film. It is made by Trident in Illinois, USA.

Looking for Trident CAT 4? It has been discontinued, and we no longer stock it. CAT 5 is the 2-part urethane we recommend in its place.

How do they compare side by side?

All data below comes from Trident's product descriptions and technical data sheets, as listed on our product pages.

Enhancement always depends on the surface. Run a test patch on the actual pavers.

When should you choose CAT 5?

  • The client wants a dramatic wet look and high gloss.
  • Joint sand washout, weeds or ants are a problem and you want Trident's strongest joint stabilization.
  • The driveway or patio sees road salt and heavy use.
  • The job is large enough that a kit yielding 15 gal (D1) or 20 gal (D2) makes sense.

Trident's TDS calls for day and night temperatures between 7 and 35°C, with at least 4°C for 24 hours before application. Allow 24 hours before foot traffic and 48 hours before vehicles. Shop Trident Hurricane CAT 5.

When should you choose Cyclone?

  • The client wants the pavers to look clean and natural, with no gloss.
  • You still want hardened joints to reduce washout, weeds and insects.
  • Mould, moss and algae are a concern; Cyclone has an added antifungal.
  • You prefer a single-component product with no mixing on site.

Shop Trident Cyclone.

When should you choose Break Wall?

  • Plain or broomed concrete driveways, walkways, stairs, garage floors and building entrances.
  • Natural stone that is not polished or highly dense.
  • Any high-use hardscape where water and salt protection matter more than appearance.

Break Wall contains no silicone or wax, and cured it is rated freeze resistant to -51°C. It is not for marble, granite, ceramic tile, polished or honed surfaces, or asphalt. Shop Trident Break Wall.

How do you decide in five steps?

  1. Is the surface jointed pavers with sand? If not, lean to Break Wall.
  2. Does the client want the look to change? No: Break Wall or Cyclone. Yes: CAT 5.
  3. Matte or gloss? Matte: Cyclone. Wet look, high gloss: CAT 5.
  4. Test patch. Clean, dry and seal a small area, then check the look.
  5. Check the weather window. Confirm temperature and dry conditions for application and cure per the TDS.

How do these sealers handle Canadian winters?

All three are water based, so clean-up and handling are simpler than with solvent systems. For freeze-thaw:

  • CAT 5 forms a durable, breathable film that guards against salt and corrosives.
  • Cyclone protects the surface while keeping a natural look.
  • Break Wall is described as protecting against water penetration, salt and freeze/thaw damage while remaining breathable.

Whichever you choose, prep matters more than the product: remove efflorescence with EffBOMB, let the pavers dry fully, and sand the joints with clean, dry Trident SEK jointing sand. Do not let water-based sealers freeze in storage. See every Trident product in our paver and concrete sealers collection.

What does a typical contractor job look like with each?

Job Recommended sealer Why
New interlock driveway, client wants rich colour CAT 5 Wet-look enhancement plus the strongest joint stabilization
Restored older patio, sand washing out, client wants no shine Cyclone Hardens joints with a matte finish
Restored older patio, sand washing out, client wants gloss CAT 5 Hardens joints and enhances colour
Broomed concrete driveway in a salted area Break Wall Invisible, blocks water and salt
Commercial entrance, slip concerns Break Wall No film on the surface
Heritage-look natural flagstone Break Wall (non-polished stone) Keeps the natural look

What questions should you ask the client before choosing?

Contractors who pick the right Trident sealer the first time usually ask the same questions on the site visit:

  • "What do you want it to look like when we leave?" Show photos or, better, a test patch of each finish on their actual pavers. Matte and wet look are very different on charcoal pavers versus light tan.
  • "What bothers you most about it now?" Weeds and ants in the joints point to a joint-stabilizing sealer. Salt damage and spalling on a concrete driveway point to Break Wall.
  • "How is it used?" A driveway with two vehicles, a commercial drive-thru and a backyard patio wear very differently.
  • "Where does the water go?" Downspouts, irrigation and snow piles create wet zones that affect both efflorescence and sealer performance.
  • "Has it been sealed before, and with what?" You may need to strip an incompatible or failing coating first; see Trident Tidal Wave X.

How do the products differ in handling on site?

CAT 5 arrives as a 2-part kit (one 5 gal Part A and two 1 gal Part B) that must be mixed and diluted before use. Plan batch sizes so you use mixed material within the working time on the TDS, measure carefully, and keep Part A and Part B labelled. The second coat goes on once the first has cleared and is dry to the touch, usually about an hour. Cyclone and Break Wall are single-component products, which simplifies small jobs and touch-ups. For all three, use clean application equipment and keep material out of drains.

Frequently asked questions

Is CAT 5 or Cyclone better for pavers?

Neither is better in every case. CAT 5 gives the deepest wet look, high gloss and the strongest joint stabilization. Cyclone gives a matte, natural look and still hardens joint sand. Choose by the finish the client wants.

What happened to Trident CAT 4?

Trident CAT 4 has been discontinued, and StoneSealer Canada no longer stocks it. For a 2-part urethane with colour enhancement, gloss and joint stabilization, use Trident Hurricane CAT 5.

Can I put CAT 5 or Cyclone over Break Wall?

A penetrating water repellent can interfere with the adhesion of a film-forming sealer. Check with us and the Trident TDS before layering products.

Does Cyclone change the colour of pavers?

Cyclone is a matte sealer designed to lock in a clean, natural look. Always do a test patch.

Do these sealers need special sand?

CAT 5 and Cyclone work best with clean, dry, angular jointing sand such as Trident SEK, which Trident states is ideal for its joint-stabilizing sealers in joints up to 3/4". Seal on a dry surface with dry joint sand.

Are Trident sealers solvent based?

No. CAT 5, Cyclone and Break Wall are all water-based products.

Who can install Trident sealers?

The film-forming sealers are recommended for professional installation. Contractors interested in becoming certified Trident installers can contact our technical team.
